This culturally blended departure from mainstream Western fantasy adds a rich layer of realism to an otherwise alien and fantastic world. Saara El-Arifi provides The Final Strife as the beginning of an African/Arabian fantasy trilogy. However, in the world of The Final Strife, the source of divisiveness does not rely on the color of one’s skin but instead the color of one’s blood. All the inhabitants of her world are dark skinned along a color spectrum that aligns with African and Middle Eastern ethnicities. Thankfully, El-Arifi avoids these pitfalls. In much of Western literature, when novel plots venture into the realms of historical racism, slavery, and cultural oppression they risk becoming little more than historical fiction or, worse, it becomes bad historical fiction. Saara El-Arifi’s debut novel, The Final Strife, lives up to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the six-figure, five-way auction that led to Harper Voyager acquiring the UK/Commonwealth publication rights. And in the month following that book, Mollie and I both went through really difficult times in our personal lives. Liz Fosslien: Our first book, No Hard Feelings, came out in February 2019. Mike Arauz: My first question for you is just, why did you write this book? Why this topic? The interview below has been edited for length and clarity. I had the privilege of sitting down with Liz and Mollie recently to discuss their inspirations for writing Big Feelings, and how leaders and teammates can build workplace cultures that create space for our deepest emotions. Their new book Big Feelings takes a thoughtful and human approach to a heavy subject: How can we constructively process our big feelings in the day-to-day workplace? That’s exactly what Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy believe needs to change. Our traditional workplaces just weren’t designed for this level of emotional processing. Many of us have struggled to carry on with our careers during this time. Hardships existed before the pandemic, of course, but Covid brought a wave of big feelings crashing over our daily lives at a scale we haven’t seen in a generation or more. Over the past two years, we’ve collectively faced some of the most difficult emotional challenges of our lifetimes. The film itself is based on the book Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph over Tragedy, written by veteran journalists Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge. Nearly four years after the devastating attack, Patriot’s Day has been released in the UK – a drama-thriller about the events of the bombing and the subsequent manhunt. On April 15 th, 2013, near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, two homemade bombs detonated twelve seconds apart, killing three, injuring hundreds, and leading to a four-day manhunt for the two brothers responsible, resulting in the death of one and the capture of the other. The only reason for this is the familiarity of this body type for us Earth bound readers. When put into the perspective of the entire galaxy, there is noting mandating that intelligent life forms have to take on human like forms. One thing that irked me was the introduction of humanoid aliens. While the latter part of the book was of interest, it was not as strong as the beginning. I was a bit confused with this book as I moved onto the third story and did not realize that the remaining tales had nothing to do with first part of the book. In addition to that, I appreciated how these two tales were about different generations of the extraterrestrial species that interacted with the human being and how he impacted their society. The first two stories were extremely strong since they featured living organisms that were not humanoid in the least bit and lived in a manner much different to mankind's way of life. Instead, it focuses on an individual human and their intimate relationship with an extremely exotic alien life form or sentient robot.įarmer's greatest strength in this book is he creativity of these bizarre yet fascinating worlds and creatures that he has dreamed up. Strange Relations is not your typical soft science fiction that looks at how technology or alien species would impact society. Though a work of fiction, the Count’s antics (because antics are exactly what they are) are set against actual events in Soviet history, such as the holodomor in Ukraine and the rise of Stalin. For the next 30 years, the Count makes the hotel his home. Set in Soviet-era Russia, A Gentleman in Moscowtells the tale of aristocrat Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, who is ordered to spend the rest of his life under house arrest inside the lavish Hotel Metropol for upsetting certain members of the new Bolshevik regime.Īnd what a life. But no other word properly captures the pure joy that rushes off the pages of Amor Towles‘ second novel. It shrieks of stuffy high teas and old ladies with posh accents. Look, I hate to use the word ‘delightful’ in a review. If the measure of a good book is that you feel lost when you finish the last page, and wish that you could start it all over again from scratch, then A Gentleman in Moscow is the very best kind of book. A Gentleman in Moscow is all these things and, hand on my heart, the most delightful book you’ll read this year. But they make the best of every tough situation.
